Shakin Jake Dude-Action Dudley: BIO

When my 22 year old daughter decided to purchase a puppy from the Humane Society she wanted to Save a life! And she did. She found Jake at the SLC Humane Society online and fell in love with him. We went to the Humane Society on a Wednesday "just to look" and  see what it took to care for a pet and provide a life long home for one.  When we got there we looked at other Dogs and then she asked to see Jake. He was fun and loved to run out side. He didn't jump on us and would sit when commanded. He had lots of character. When we left the Humane Society we didn't take him with us we left him behind.  The next day we went to another shelter 'just to look" and  every dog was compared to this one.  He was such a character with his one ear that turns up and flops over backwards.  We left that Shelter without a dog.    I didn't know it but she tracked Jake's progress from the time she saw him for the next 2 days.
I got a message at work on Friday day from a panicked daughter:  MOM JAKE IS GOING TO BE AT AN ADOPTION FAIR @ PETCO TOMORROW MORNING!!!  We made plans to go to another shelter Saturday morning and we spent abt an hour there. With each passing moment I could tell my daughter was nervous and agitated.  While leaving the place I turned to her and said.... "if you feel this strongly about Jake and can afford him I say lets go get your dog."    I know part of her hesitation came from her having to go back to college for one last semester so that would mean that I would be his primary caregiver for the 5 months she was gone.. There wasn't much I was doing except going to work each day and coming home. So taking care of him would stop me from being a self proclaimed recluse.
We headed over to the Petco and as soon as we  walked in the door  straight ahead about 50ft was a kennel with a dog in it.  There were other kennels off to the side but in the kennel straight ahead, a puppy stood up and was staring at us and  suddenly a little puppy dog tail just started waggin and going in circles. In almost a run, My daughter headed straight for him.  She got him out of the kennel and asked to walk him around.  As she was walking him around 2 more families came in asking for Jake.  I kind of felt bad for them because there was no way this kid of mine was leaving this dog behind again.  We left with a new family member: Jake Dude-Action Dudley!
What we know about Jake is not much.  He was with a family that brought him to the Humane Society at the age of  abt 9 months because they no longer wanted him. He came in on Monday. We first saw him on a Thursday and brought him home on a Saturday.  When they come into the Shelter the first they they do is neuter them.  He was in a kennel all by himself and he was so happy to see people at his kennel.  When we got him home we found he was afraid of almost everything: Laundry baskets, vaccum cleaners, the doors to the stairwell, Leaves blowing across the grounds....ect.  And he had some aggression toward other dogs.  He was pretty much house trained and was good at obeying simple commands. Because we live in a pet friendly community it's imperative to him being here that he get along with other dogs.  We had some training to do.
After a month of extensive search my daughter found who she felt was the best trainer in the area.  She chose  Kendra Beckman of Doggie Mannerz  She came to our home and did  a consult with us.  We were confident she was the trainer for us. We sent him away to Puppy Camp.  Within 24 hours  We had pictures of him hangin out with  Kendra's dawgz! Within 2 weeks we had him at the doggie park playing with other dogs! The program we chose with Doggie Mannerz cover's Jake for his life time and he also goes to Doggie daycare with her twice a week.  We love DOGGIE MANNERZ!!!
Jake was improving in all areas and we couldn't be more pleased with our new family member.
On Halloween Jake had his first Seizure.  It panicked and sobbing I called my daughter up. I didn't know what to expect from him. Would he be aggressive and attack? Would he have another one and die? Should I   take him to the E.R? I didn't even have his vet's ph#. I was scared to leave him alone.   We called an emergency vet and because it was only his first they had us monitor him and instructed us to make an appt with our Regular vet which we did.  Our Vet, Dr Rick Whitty at Salt Lake City Veterinary Services and his staff has been phenomenal with Jake. I've noticed if he's taken in for something that is painful. they cry when he cries. To make a great service even better they are also a MOBILE SERVICE! That means for about $10 more they will come to you. WHO DOES THAT???    Salt Lake City Veterinary Services does that's who!   On November 17th 2012 Jake was diagnosed with  Canine Epilepsy. Had his first Seizure On Halloween 2012. What an appropriate day for such a scary event.  My Daughter happens to have had a child in her student teaching class that has epilepsy also.   The thought came to make Jake an awareness dog for pet and child epilepsy! By doing so we can take him into the class rooms and speak to kids about how we can help those in our class when they get the shakes and create a class room plan with teachers and schools for those who suffer from epilepsy. This way members of the class room be come helpers and guardians instead of taunters.

We've been trying to get Jake's seizures under control for a few months now. He needs 2 tests that will help the doctors determine how to help him better. Up until now we've been able to keep up with his medication and other health needs.  We have set up a Donation Page on his behalf to help raise money for the two tests that are needed. We are asking for donations  of any amount to help "shakin Jake" get better!     We will also be updating and tracking his progress online so his friends and fan will know how he's doing and other things we are doing to help with Epilepsy in  Pets and Children!
